'All they want is to retain power'

What say you on the issue below?

PETALING JAYA: MCA vice-president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai and his supporters want a second extraordinary general meeting (EGM) only to safeguard their positions and grab power, said Datuk Theng Book.

The Save MCA campaign chief said Liow and his group had only started to talk about fresh elections after they realised the president’s post would not be up for grabs.

“Why didn’t the intention to have fresh elections come straight after the Oct 10 EGM and again when he (Liow) was made the deputy president at the Oct 15 central committee meeting?

“It is very obvious that only after he (Liow) realised he no longer had the chance to be the president, did he want the fresh elections,” he said.

He said the group must now return to the fold and work with other party leaders to make the greater unity plan work.

“If they really love MCA and think about the interest of the party, they should stop creating chaos,” he said.

He also urged president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat and Dr Chua to work together to make the greater unity plan a success.

If the plan did not work out within the given time frame, he said both of them would have to step down from their posts.

“They will have to let go of the past and put the party, the Chinese community and the nation first,” he said.

On the party rejuvenation efforts, Theng said he supported the direct election of the party president.

“With the implementation of this new system, the president should be allowed to choose his running mate for the deputy president’s post.

“The posts for state chairman and deputy chairman should also be filled by elected, not appointed candidates,” he said, adding that the current system of appointing the state and vice chairman allowed cronyism within the party.
