PETALING JAYA: It is usual for the party leadership to revamp the various posts in the presidential council to enable it to function more efficiently, said MCA central committee (CC) member Tan Cheng Liang.
She said this was in order to realise the ultimate objective of the party’s greater unity plan.
“The presidential council is a policy-making body of the party. Each and every member in the council must agree, co-operate and help the party leadership to move forward with all its undertakings,” she said in a statement yesterday.
She said that under Article 46 of the party’s constitution, the president had the absolute power to appoint not more than 10 members to the presidential coucil and terminate their appointments if and when he thought fit.
On Wednesday, MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat announced six new presidential council appointees to the line-up, including CC members Datuk Seri Tan Chai Ho, Tan, Datuk Lee Chee Leong, Datuk Ti Lian Ker, Datuk Dr Mah Hang Soon and Heng Seai Kie.
Three leaders — Datuk Loke Yuen Yow, Gan Ping Sieu and Wong Hock Aun — were once again appointed council members.
The new appointees were to replace six leaders — MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, Wanita chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun and CC members Dr Hou Kok Chung, Datuk Wee Jeck Seng, Lee Wei Kiat and Wong Nai Chee.
Tan reiterated that the party leadership had undertaken the unity plan by setting aside all differences of opinion just to find a way to resolve the prolonged party dispute.
“Thus, all should unconditionally co-operate and consolidate the party so as not to make the party become fragmented and weak,” said Tan, who is also MCA consumer affairs bureau chief.
