Cosy joint offers fresh and healthy creations

What say you on the issue below?

OLIVE fruits conjure images of a clean countryside that beckons with snug cottages and homey delicacies.

Most restaurants consider it a prized ingredient to make their dishes tastier and richer.

The Olive Tree Cafe in Damansara Utama is among those inspired by the rich fruit.

Best pair: Calamari and Onion Rings, and Country Fried Chicken to go with thirst quenchers Lime Mint Fizz and Cool Cucumber Cooler.

Tucked away at the commercial area Casa Suites, the restaurant with white, green and grey hues provides a refreshing sight to lift your mood for a cosy meal. Plush velvet couches are juxtaposed against sleek white plastic chairs with perforated back rest to provide the setting for groups of different needs.

Tassels hanging from the ceiling right up to the polished cement floor, serve as partition, adding elegance to the cosy atmosphere.

“The concept of The Olive Tree is in keeping with the type of food served at the cafe — modern, chic and fresh. We chose olive for its rich history, outstanding attributes, nutritional qualities and exquisite taste,” said owner Phuah Ken Bin.

Of course, the menu is well infused with olive ingredients. All pastas are cooked with olive oil, sandwiches are sprinkled with it but what catches the attention of many diners is the olive herb rice – a substitute for the boring white rice – to go with a selection of Asian dishes.

It is made by mixing fluffy white rice with olive bits and eight herbs including rosemary, thyme, basil and parsley. It’s enticing with a healthy green hue and fresh aroma that do not overpower the dishes.

Favourite: Spicy Spaghetti Seafood is popular among diners at The Olive Cafe.

Phuah said the restaurant would introduce green tea rice and red bean rice inspired by the same style to satisfy the appetite of those who were health conscious.

Pastas are prepared with the traditional recipe, altered slightly to cater to the locals. In addition to olive oil that tempts with a light, clean fragrance, the pastas are said to be laden with a host of fresh, natural ingredients.

“We are located in a commercial area where the lunch crowd does not have much time to spare. Hence, our pastas and other dishes are served in a short time, yet we offer diners wholesome options to keep them fresh. To top it off, we have our little quote cards on each table to make your day,” he added.

Spicy Spaghetti Seafood is a favourite, and it is simply a fuss-free plate of pasta tossed with olive oil alongside a bountiful of seafood, with a hint of chilli to give you that “kick”.

The chic décor belies the fact that this outlet serves local delights in the right texture and flavour, unlike some westernised versions elsewhere. Roti Jala with Chicken Curry is the best evidence. Not only does the chicken curry have the sought-after taste and aroma afforded by a good choice of herbs, the roti jala also has the perfect thin yet firm texture to please even the discerning ones.

A healthier alternative: Teriyaki Chicken with olive herb rice.

If one is in for a more elaborate meal, Olive Tree has the options, too, with its western selection. Grilled Cajun Chicken with Potato Salad is recommended. Chicken coated with peppery and stronger-flavoured spices pairs harmonically with potato salad that gives it a creamy and soothing touch.

Dessert will not disappoint, too, try Apple Cinnamon Crepe that pleases the palate with its sweet-tangy attributes.

The comfortable couches lining one side of the outlet open their arms to welcome diners who are in for a drink or light chat with friends.

Lime Mint Fizz and Cool Cucumber Cooler are the specialities here. The former excites taste buds with shredded mint leaf that offers a cold sensation while the latter is indisputably a heat and thirst quencher.

To enhance your conversation, nibble on Calamari and Onion Rings or Country Fried Chicken served in a hearty portion.

The restaurant is not just an eating and drinking place. Do expect exclusive lunches, cooking demonstrations and health workshops to come by from time to time.
