ORCHIDS of various colours and species were the centre of attraction at the three-day Botanical Discovery programme held at the Botanical Garden in Precinct 1, Putrajaya.
Themed “All About Orchids & Orchids for All”, the inaugural programme will be made a yearly event and a new tourist attraction in the Botanical Garden.
Putrajaya Corporation president Tan Sri Samsudin Osman said the orchid was chosen as it was a valuable natural source and the orchid family (orchidaceae) was the largest family of flowering plants.
“It was recorded that more than 800 orchid species have been discovered in Malaysia and registered as a nature treasure that needs to be conserved and protected.
“The main objective of the programme is to promote and make the Putrajaya Botanical Garden a prime destination for flora and environment-related recreational and educational activities,” he said.
At the event was a carnival showcasing the diversity of orchids, including the species native to Malaysia and South-East Asia.
“The carnival aims to introduce the diversity of orchids in Malaysia, including those in the Botanical Garden, said Samsudin,
“It is also hoped that this will spur an exchange of knowledge, create business opportunities and improve the tourism sector as one of the main economy generators in Putrajaya,” he said.
Also at the event was Federal Territories and Urban Wellbeing Minister Raja Datuk Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin’s wife Nafesah Raja Nong Chik who launched the Biggest Orchid Collage event in conjunction with the programme.
The Slipper Orchid collage made it to the Malaysia Book of Records. She was presented with the Bamboo Orchid species aka Arundina Graminifolia Wow’s Dwarf.
The new cultivar introduced is the result of many generations of artificial breeding and has now been bred over three years to obtain an assured quality.
