Cleaning up the river

What say you on the issue below?

WITH the belief that small effort, commitment and teamwork will go a long way towards creating a cleaner and healthier living environment, 20 employees of K-One Technology Berhad and their families got together to clean-up Sungai Tua in Ulu Yam recently.

The activity was supported by the Kelah Association of Malaysia (Kagum), an association formed by a group of fish enthusiasts and anglers to help conserve Malaysian rivers.

Two association members joined hands with K-One employees, led by K-One Group group chairman Edwin Lim Beng Fook took part in the clean-up.

Besides picking up litter like cans, bottles, plastic bags, polystyrene plates and cups, the team also collected some surprising items such as spectacles, watch and carpet during the activity.

A load of rubbish: The employees of K-One Technology and their family members collected 186kg of rubbish in Sungai Tua in Ulu Yam.

The atmosphere was further livened up by the fun activities put together by the organising committee where all volunteers were divided into groups and had to “compete” with each other to collect the most rubbish and most unique rubbish.

“K-One has always believed in giving something back to the community and this activity has provided all our employees the opportunity to work together for a good cause.

“The activity also reminds us of our commitment and responsibility to provide the future generation with a clean, safe and healthy environment,” said Lim.

The activity was indeed an eye-opener for many of the volunteers who were first timers.

However, it has proved to be an exciting experience for them. Although exhausted, thirsty and sweaty by the end of the activity, the knowledge and experience gained made it all worthwhile.

“Many of my colleagues volunteered for this activity as we feel disheartened by trash at picnic sites or rubbish washed up on the river banks.

“At the end of the activity, we felt so motivated by it that we have offered to get together for similar activity regularly.

“The activity has made us realise the role we can all play in keeping our rivers clean and protecting the environment,” said Dela Amira, anemployee of the K-One Group.

At the end of the day, the volunteers collected 186kg of rubbish.
