PETALING JAYA: The DAP central executive committee has given its approval to a group of party members and supporters to set up the Rocket United Cafe in SS2/63 here and use the party’s logo on its signboard, said the head of secretariat for the DAP secretary-general’s office, Foo Yueh Chuan.
She said the approval from the Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) was secured for the cafe’s signboard and business premises on Aug 18, adding that the objective of the cafe was for the party to increase its reach to Malaysians.
“It is also to make available services such as voter registration and the registration for state benefits, such as the Mesra Usia Mas and the Tabung Warisan Anak Selangor,” she said in a statement here yesterday.
Foo said the cafe, officially launched by DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng on Oct 4, also contributed a certain percentage of the proceeds from its food and beverage sales to the party, with no financial or investment risk to be borne by the party.
It was reported earlier that MBPJ was investigating a complaint about a “political logo” used in a signboard at the cafe.
Several DAP members had expressed displeasure that the party’s logo had been used by outsiders while councillors said the council by-laws did not allow the use of such logos.
However, councillor Derek Fernandez had said the MBPJ would allow the cafe to use the logo by way of a special approval if DAP had given its permission to the cafe owner.
A disgruntled DAP official said several leaders including a state assemblyman had voiced the displeasure of the grassroots over the cafe, but other leaders including party adviser Lim Kit Siang and Guan Eng had brushed it aside.
He said the party was hurting the feelings of other like-minded businesses by favouring one restaurant.
