PROPERTY developer IJM Land held an activity-packed day in Seremban recently for the whole family in the name of charity and fun.
The Hawaiian-themed event called the WAO Luau, was organised to raise funds for the Woman’s Aid Organisation (WAO) and as an appreciation gesture for house buyers in Seremban 2.
The day’s programme began at 7.30am with a men’s 10km and women’s 7km fun run which took the runners along a route within the Seremban 2 development.
Island princesses: Little girls dressed up as popular Disney character Lilo (from the cartoon Lilo and Stitch) during a performance. Four hundred people including students took part in the run and some 200 lucky runners received an IJM Land pen drive each.
The top five finishers from the men’s and women’s 7km (aged 16 years and above) won RM300 each while the top five runners aged below 16 years took home RM150 each.
IJM Land sales and marketing manager Susan Teh said the appreciation party usually had a different theme every year with funds raised going to charity and this time, WAO was chosen as the beneficiary of the event.
“WAO is committed to confronting violence against women and also provides shelter, counselling and child support to battered women, as well as creating public awareness of women’s rights.
“We managed to raise RM8,200 for WAO just from three activities held during the luau - the run, a three-on-three basketball competition and a colouring contest for children.
Running for a good cause: About 400 people took part in the charity fun run. “However, that will not be our only contribution to the organisation for abused women and children. We plan to top up the amount,” she said.
The event was a success judging from the more than 2,000 people who turned up at the IJM Land office in Seremban throughout the day to take part in the activities.
A booth manned by WAO volunteers was also set up, where leaflets highlighting the plight of abused women were given to visitors.
Basketball and colouring contest, the day’s other activities were free-of-charge and there was something for everyone - an inflatable bouncy castle, a petting zoo, a mechanical bull ride, pony rides and even a CosmoDome (portable planetarium) to keep children occupied while adults were entertained by musical performances.
To add to the Hawaiian-themed merriment, little girls dressed up as popular Disney character Lilo (from the cartoon Lilo and Stitch) paraded around the grounds in their colourful outfits.
Despite the continuous rain throughout the week, it was only sunny skies during the luau and visitors were treated to free ice-cream, coconut water and cendol.
Teh said it was great fun and a good day out for the entire family in the name of charity where everyone had something to keep them busy.
“In addition, I am sure we helped raise awareness of WAO and its efforts to help abused women and children as many of the visitors stopped by the WAO booth out of curiousity,” she said.
IJM Land is the developer of the Seremban 2 township and S2 Heights which spans 1,538ha.
