THERE will be an increase in the number of teams in the second edition of the Tan Sri Mustapha Kamal Challenge Trophy Under-20 football league, which kicks off at the Shah Alam Mini Stadium on Dec 13.
The league, organised by the NPNG Football Club and sanctioned by the Football Association of Selangor (FAS), will have 20 teams in action.
Organising chairman Ahmad Khalif Mustapha said last year’s league, with 16 teams, was an eye-opener.
“We were surprised by the overwhelming response; we had to disappoint several teams. So, this year, we have opted to increase the number of teams to 20. We hope the teams will register early to avoid being left out,” Ahmad Khalif said after launching the league with FAS secretary Datuk Hamidin Mohd Amin.
Registered clubs and football academies in the Klang Valley are encouraged to register for the six-week-long league, which culminates with the final in mid-January.
The league offers a total purse of RM6,500 to the top four teams. Last year, Permodalan Negri Selangor Berhad FC edged Selangor Indian Sports Council (SISC) 1-0 in the final to emerge champions.
Tournament director Michael Palani said the league would be an interesting and exciting affair.
The entry fee is RM300 per team. For details, visit www.npng.com.my or call 012-277 5514.
