THE National Kidney Foundation (NKF) received a contribution of RM28,000 which will be used to buy dialysis equipment for its centres.
The donation was presented by Lonpac Insurance Bhd (Lonpac Insurance) in conjunction with its Community Health Day.
Lonpac Community Health Day, which was held at Lonpac Insurance’s headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, featured activities like health screening, counselling and health talks and was open to Lonpac employees and the public.
The one-day event was supported by NKF, through its kidney outreach programme.
“We believe that health screenings and testing are important, as it makes it possible for common diseases such as kidney diseases to be prevented, detected and treated early,” said Lonpac Insurance Bhd adviser Tee Choon Yeow.
As far as kidney diseases are concerned, more than 500 million people worldwide or about one adult in 10 have some form of kidney damage.
In Malaysia, the number of patients with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is expected to increase to nearly 20,000 by 2010, from 17,000 in 2007.
“With the alarming number of health issues that we face with nowadays, each and every one of us should opt for a healthier lifestyle.
“Hence, one of the important steps is implementing a preventive health care programme and health screening is a good start,” Tee added.
During the event, more than 100 people were screened.
They were checked for blood pressure, body mass index and waist circumference and had urine tests as well as tests for blood sugar and cholesterol level.
