ANDY KEE won a double in the Mydin-Head Malaysian Senior age group super doubles tennis championships at the National Tennis Centre in Jalan Duta recently.
His first successful outing was in the men’s 45-50 years age group. Kee teamed up with Marco Winter and defeated Khairudin Baharom-Zulkifli Kadir 6-4, 6-2 in the final.
Kee was on court again for the newly- introduced 100Plus mixed doubles final. He and his partner Jennifer Mok showed excellent understanding and outclassed Jos Fraaijie -Keiko Sasaki 8-5 to win the 100Plus trophy.
Tournament director Norman Woo said they were pleased with the encouraging response for the championships.
“We had about 200 players from all over Malaysia. There were also players from Sarawak and Sabah. Many of them took the opportunity to meet old friends. Our aim was to bring together the veterans for friendly competitions.
“Looking at the positive feedback, we have succeeded in our mission, ‘‘ said Woo.
This year, the competition also saw an increase in the total cash purse. Last year, the total amount offered was RM8,000 but due to support from well wishers and sponsors, the prize money was doubled to RM16,000 this year.
The organisers also hosted a grand dinner for the participants and well wishers on the first day of the championships. The sponsors for this year’s competition were Mydin, Head, 100Plus, Zang Toi and Hiestand.
Former Davis Cup player Toi See Juan, who won the 50-54 age group with Melvin Song, said the organisers should make efforts to make the event an international one. “The event can be promoted and will attract participants from the Asian region. There are a lot of former internationals still actively involved in tennis. It will be great if the organisers can bring the players for this championships,’’ said Zang Toi.
