TRADITIONAL Sinhalese food were the main attraction at the annual Sinhala Gala Nite held at Legend Hotel in Kuala Lumpur recently.

The fare served included konde kevum, mung kevum, kokis, bibik kang and kiri bath.

Held for the seventh year, the Gala Nite also included an array of activities to entertain the 400-odd guests.

The night began with the ligting of an oil lamp by Deputy Foreign Minister Senator A Kohilan Pillay, Malaysian Sinhalese Association (MSA) president Mahinda Jayatilake, Deputy High Commissioner of Sri Lanka to Malaysia Maj-Gen Udaya Perera and MSA committee members.

This was followed by speeches and Sinhala Cultural dance performances, presenting of education awards, Sinhala Night Queen contest and a dance contest.

The lucky draw grand prize winner received two return tickets to Sri Lanka.

Mahinda said the event was held to foster closer ties among the Sinhalese community in Malaysia.

“Most of the Sinhalese here still have relatives in Sri Lanka and keep in touch with them. Now they are Malaysian citizens and contribute towards the economy here.

“About 10,000 Sinhalese are in Malaysia. It is a small community,” he said.
