TENNIS coaches were treated to a lively talk by former international great Dr Desmond Oon during a one-day seminar entitled Latest Development and Advancement in Tennis-A Breathrough in Malaysia recently.
Oon, who became a tennis professional in 1960, represented Malaysia and Singapore in Asian tournaments and played on the international circuit from 1963 to 1968.
The USPTA Master Professional, tester and honorary life member talked about the present world of tennis as well as some biomechanics of the game.
He said players must differentiate between style and form.
“Style is our own while form is what we are looking for,” he said.
He shared a few tips on how to play the game better.
Oon said it was important for the knees to be bent and to push from the back leg.
“The left hand is raised high so that the right hand can have more power.
“Use a laidback wrist and the butt of the racquet should face the net.
“The power comes from the wrist pronation,” he said.
Onn said if the player was going from left to right, he should always land on the right foot and to use the inner portion of the right foot to recover.
He also said the modern game was based on the angular movement.
During the seminar, Oon also spoke about the common tennis elbow condition, which could be minimised through good techniques from right biomechanics.
As for the cure, he said there was none but players could opt for remedial action.
On exercising, Oon said one should keep the spine fairly straight.
The free seminar was hosted by invitation only for tennis coaches at the Royal Selangor Club in Bukit Kiara, Kuala Lumpur.
