AN estimated 100 streetlights along 20 roads in Taman Bukit Rawang Jaya, Rawang have not been functioning since September last year and this has contributed to the increasing incidence of snatch theft and robbery cases in the area.
Each road has an average of five streetlights not lit up.
According to Selayang MCA Youth chief Lee Li Yew, who also stays in Taman Bukit Rawang Jaya, when he contacted Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) six months ago, a TNB officer said that the Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) did not pay the electricity bills.
“Because of this, TNB had to cut the electricity supply to the streetlights,’’ said Lee, who is also Bukit Rawang Jaya MCA chairman.
Lee explained that all the streetlights in the area were lit up during the general election in March last year.
“MPS should ensure that the bills are paid and not ignore it.
“I have called up MPS about five times over the last six months but nothing has been done to rectify the matter. Other areas like Kampung Datuk Lee Kim Sai and Kampung Sungai Terentang in Rawang and Kundang also face similar problems,’’ he said.
In an earlier statement, Rawang assemblyman Gan Pei Nei said that the lamp posts had been put up without valid TNB metres.
“This causes an overflow supply of voltage while some areas have low voltage supply.
“The electricity supply was tapped illegally which TNB has to bear the cost. This is why the electricity supply is cut in these areas.
“If the previous government had followed proper procedures to request for streetlights from TNB, the utility company will definitely agree and MPS will have no problem in maintaining it now,’’ she said.
