Most squatters are in Klang and Selayang

What say you on the issue below?

SQUATTERS in Klang and Selayang make up more than half of the total squatter population in the state.

The two areas covered about 60% of the total 3,964 families identified through a recent survey.

State Housing, Building Management and Squatter Committee chairman Iskandar Abdul Samad said Klang had the highest with 1,385 (34.9%) followed by Selayang with 1,075 (27.1%).

Iskandar said 2,707 of the families were residing on government land, including railway and Drainage and Irrigation Department reserves.

In his reply to a question from Datuk Satim Diman (BN-Sri Serdang), he said the state government would not be using the Emergency Act 1969 to evacuate squatters from government land.

However, he said it would be carrying out the evacuation exercise when necessary under Section 425 of the National Land Code.

“All the local authorities have been directed to closely monitor the existing squatter areas that are situated on government reserve land, including forest reserves.

“The state has also directed all the district offices not to issue any Temporary Occupation Licence (TOL) to new applicants,’’ he said.

Iskandar said the squatter families would be offered low-cost houses at a subsidised price of RM35,000 and a maximum of RM2,000 as shifting allowance.
