Academy putting up concert in aid of autistic kids

What say you on the issue below?

A MUSICAL concert to raise money for families affected by autism will be held on Dec 13 night at Dewan Sivik, Petaling Jaya.

Students and teachers of Opus Academy of Music will be singing, dancing and playing a variety of musical instruments.

An ensemble of persons with autism called Shining Stars, will also be performing.

They will be drumming with Takeo Miyoshi, a clinical psychologist-cum-percussionist who had volunteered to coach them for the past three months.

Good show in store: Students and teachers of Opus Academy of Music will be singing, dancing and playing a variety of musical instruments at the concert.

Themed, “Give Hope, Give Life”, the concert’s proceeds will go towards support group, Parents Resource for Autism (PR4A).

The academy’s principal Anne Lee, said the money was to ensure more persons with autism have access to interventional therapies that would equip them with skills to think, communicate, socialise and ultimately, to gain independence.

“Over the years, I see more and more children coming to the academy with some learning issues. I support the need to intervene effectively. That’s why we are organising this concert,” said Lee.

PR4A president K.C. Lim said the costs of providing therapies were high as the demands for experts and centres remain critical.

To date, PR4A has set up a resource centre in Petaling Jaya to enable parents to receive training and for their autistic children to gain skills in art and computer.

“We want to reach out to more families, especially those who lack the means to pay for their children’s therapies,” he adds.
