PETALING JAYA: Livestock breeders from Kampung Sungai Kertas, Ulu Yam, who sent 30 truckloads of cattle to the state secretariat recently to demand assistance, have been offered relocation to a new farm in Serendah.
The Selangor Government will turn a 40ha area near an abandoned orchid farm into an integrated livestock breeding facility.
State Tourism, Consumer Affairs and Environment Committee chairman Elizabeth Wong said the location of the cattle farms, which were damaged during a landfill collapse on Sept 23, was no longer suitable for farming.
The collapse was reported to have been caused by a deep trench dug by the Selayang Municipal Council and the Fire and Rescue Department to put out underground fires that had been burning for the last five months.
“We are also inviting breeders who have not obtained a licence or do not have a place to rear livestock to make use of this new farm,” she said at a Hari Raya open house yesterday at Damansara Damai in Sungai Buloh.
Wong added that breeders at the new integrated farm only needed to pay rental.
She said the state was also getting input from the Veterinary Department to provide the necessary facilities for the farmers.
“We hope the first batch can move in by the end of this year,” she said.
State Agriculture, Natural Resources and Entrepreneurial Development Committee chairman Yaakob Sapari said meetings were still being carried out to finalise the details and mechanism of the project.
