BUTTERWORTH: Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) in Penang may incur an estimated RM3mil in losses this year due to cable thefts, its state general manager Lai Hock Kian said.
“As of September, we have recorded 465 cable theft cases with losses of about RM2.7mil,” he told reporters at the launch of TM’s Shang Qun Chinese language website in Highway Auto-City, Juru, yesterday.
“We are surprised that the thefts still occur despite installing alarm systems in some of our major stations.”
Lai said some of the cables were placed underground and locks were fastened on the gates of the tunnel’s entrances.
“Costly security systems were installed in places where the thefts had been rampant but to no avail.
“In some cases, the cables still had to be replaced as the thieves had cut the cables but were unsuccessful in removing them,” he added.
Earlier, TM’s SME executive vice-president Shanti Jusnita Johari said the Shang Qun website was an extension to its TM SME business portal.
