GEORGE TOWN: Police believe they have busted one of the biggest drug syndicates in Penang following a raid at a bungalow-turned-drug laboratory in the tourist belt of Batu Ferringghi.
Drugs worth millions of ringgit in the black market were seized during the 1am raid yesterday.
Police barged in by breaking down the front and back doors to gain access to the bungalow. Four Indonesians, aged between 20 and 40, were literally caught napping inside.
Cooking utensils and ingredients to brew a certain type of drug were also recovered during the joint operation by the state anti-narcotics department and a team from Bukit Aman. Also seized were several luxury cars.
Police had been monitoring the surroundings and movement of the suspects for weeks before deciding to strike yesterday.
According to police sources, the raiding team spent hours trying to tabulate the amount of drugs seized which was believed to be the largest in recent years.
A large amount of cash was also recovered. Penang police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Ayub Yaakob confirmed the incident but declined to elaborate.
In another development, a raid at an apartment in Bandar Baru Air Itam for drugs led police to the unexpected discovery of a pistol and a grenade.
The state anti-narcotics team also found 40 rounds of ammunition and seized drugs such as ketamine, syabu and heroin.
A 25-year-old man and a woman in her 30s were arrested during the 11pm raid on Tuesday.
