KUALA LUMPUR: MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai says some party leaders were trying to “poison” his relationship with president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat for their own personal agenda.
Liow, who is also the Health Minister, said he was “under siege” now and believed the attacks on his personality and credibility were the works of certain leaders who “wanted to create a split in the party”.
“I also feel betrayed. I have supported Ong all this while. I have supported his effort to have one MCA. Only after the Oct 10 extraordinary general meeting (EGM) did the situation turn sour,” he said in an interview.
Liow gave his account of what transpired in the time between the EGM and the central committee (CC) meeting on Oct 15 where he was elected deputy president.
He said on the eve of Oct 15, Ong called him from Bangkok asking him to arrange a dinner with him, vice-presidents Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha and Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen, Wanita MCA chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun and MCA Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong.
“He met us one by one but did not state his intention,” he recalled. “Following that, some central committee members asked me to talk to the president to find an amicable solution.”
For this, Liow said he was accused of betraying and plotting to topple Ong and was called names like “traitor”, “betrayer” and “CC mutineer”.
Liow said 23 CC members endorsed in writing, authorising him to talk to the president, but “not to demand he should step down”.
Liow also said he would take legal action against those who had defamed him over an allegation that his wife had accepted a Toyota Alphard vehicle costing almost RM600,000 as a gift on his behalf.
“I have given my fullest cooperation to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and the police,” he said. “I will take legal action against those trying to defame me.
