A WEBSITE has falsely reported that Malaysian-born singer Nicholas Teo is dead, according to Sin Chew Daily.
The report, posted by a netizen on a Chinese website, said that the Taiwan-based singer had died of complications following a liver transplant. It appeared on the website while Teo was hospitalised in China for liver infection recently.
He was discharged from hospital on Mon-day after being given a clean bill of health.
> Nanyang Siang Pau in its editorial called on the government to mete out harsher punishment against civil servants who had abused their power and position as revealed in the Auditor-General’s (A-G) report.
The daily said freezing their promotion and salary increment would not deter these officers from committing similar offences in future.
It noted that the types of malpractice revealed in the A-G’s annual report showed how serious corruption was in government agencies.
“To the officers involved in these activities, whether they are promoted or not, or whether they receive a higher salary increment or otherwise is not a big deal.
“What is more important to them is the opportunity to exploit public office for personal interest,” it said, adding that while there is a system in place to reward or punish government staff, it is not implemented well.
It added that it was about time the civil service emulated the private sector and make the working environment in the public sector more competitive.
