KAMPAR: Heavy rain briefly disrupted search operations for the two missing girls from the Kuala Dipang suspension bridge tragedy.
Kampar police chief Supt Aziz Salleh said the task involved more than 500 personnel.
Besides the police, other agencies involved in the operations were the Fire and Rescue Department, commandos and the navy.
The girls, V. Divyashree, 12, of Sekolah Kebangsaan Tamil (SRJK) Gopeng and M. Devatharshini, 11, of SJK Tamil Mambang Diawan, went missing after they and 20 other pupils fell into the river when the bridge collapsed as they were crossing it.
Supt Aziz said the operations covered a 15km stretch along the river.
“Initially, we hoped that the search could end at the river rubbish trap near Tronoh.
“But now, we will continue with the search downstream,” he said.
Yesterday, six personnel from the Public Works Department in Kuala Lumpur were at the scene to conduct an investigation on the structure of the collapsed bridge.
Meanwhile, Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said safety aspects should be given priority when organising activities involving children.
She was speaking to reporters during a visit to the site of the tragedy.
Shahrizat met with the families of the three victims and other pupils who were rescued.
CEO of the National Welfare Fund Datuk Sayed A. Rahman Mohd Sayed, who accompanied the minister, said the three families would receive a contribution of RM2,000 each.
