1Malaysia F1 team on schedule, says Fernandes

PETALING JAYA: The 1Malaysia F1 team is taking shape, with the lead driver and chief executive officer identified, said AirAsia CEO Datuk Seri Tony Fernandes.

He said the team’s financial director and commercial head had been appointed, including Malaysian A1 driver, Fairuz Fauzy.

“We have shortlisted six drivers and we have another driver in mind. We are in the midst of getting him on board,” said Fernandes, who refused to divulge any other names.

He said they had already recruited 50 individuals for the technical depart- ment, of whom 20 were Malaysians.

Fernandes was speaking to The Star before participating in a live online chat session, where he responded to questions from the public about the Malaysian F1 team at Studio V, 1 Utama yesterday mor- ning.

He also received seven applications from interested individuals including a PhD holder from Malaysia during the course of the chat session.
