FOR restaurant manager Yusnita Yusof, the Hari Raya that she celebrated when she was just 12, is the best as yet.
That year, Yusnita and her cousins roamed their kampung in Alor Setar, Kedah on the second day of the festival for duit raya.
“We were all competing to collect the most money as all of us had plans of what to do and buy with the money,” said Yusnita.
However, towards the end of the day, they found themselves knocking on the final few houses in the village.
“We knocked on one of the houses but there was no reply. My older cousins were adamant that someone lived there.
“After some time an old woman answered the knocks and invited us in,” said Yusnita.
However, after stepping into the house, the children saw that she was alone and did not have much to eat and as such did not dare to ask her for duit raya.
Instead, they decided to use their collection to buy daily necessities such as rice, noodles, cooking oil and snacks for the woman.
“We were so happy that night but when we awoke the next morning, we saw many people gathered at the woman’s house and found out that she had passed away,” said Yusnita who won the grand prize for her story in Suria FM’s Senandung Kasih Bersama Tomei contest last month.
The contest attracted close to 1,000 participants who shared their unforgettable memories of Hari Raya through an online entry to the station’s website or SMS during the Suria Cinta programme by DJ Lin.
Yusnita took home a set of rings from Tomei worth RM1,000 while 25 other participants won Tomei vouchers worth RM100 each.
Their stories were also read out on air during the Surianova programme by DJ Bob Ringgo and DJ Naim.
