GENTING HIGHLANDS: Precautions will be stepped up to ensure that no deaths occur at future camping activities, said Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin.

He also said camping activities will continue and all schools must take note of the Kampar bridge tragedy.

“This tragedy is the first in the ministry’s history,” he told reporters on Wednesday after opening a conference on “New Developments in Education” at Institut Aminuddin Baki here.

On Monday night, an 11-year-old girl drowned and two other pupils went missing after the suspension bridge they were crossing gave way, causing them to plunge into Sungai Kampar.

Nineteen others who were on the bridge were rescued from the river.

They were with a group of 294 pupils, aged between 10 and 12, from 64 schools in the Kinta Selatan district attending a four-day 1Malaysia camp organised by the Education Ministry to foster better ties between the races.

The pupils were monitored by 25 teachers.

Muhyiddin, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said the ministry was also considering setting up centralised pre-schools in rural areas.

The proposed pre-schools will be equipped with residential facilities, he added.
