KUCHING: More than 100 native customary rights (NCR) land cases are pending in the High Courts statewide, newly-appointed Sarawak PKR chief Baru Bian said.
He said the landowners concerned were fighting for their customary rights with timber and quarry licencees as well as oil palm and forest plantation lease holders.
There are also cases involving land acquisition for road and other public projects.
“The court cases do not involve only the natives. Within the Kuching area, my firm is handling more than 10 cases involving Malay landowners,” lawyer Baru said in his maiden press conference as state PKR chairman at a hotel yesterday.
“For NCR claims, we propose that a Land Commission is set up to look into the claims.
“The commission must have the power to investigate, survey and issue titles independently,” said Baru.
There are some 1.5 million hectares of NCR land in the state, the majority of which is idle or underdeveloped and without titles.
