‘Unity plan must involve all’

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai has suggested that the party’s greater unity plan should involve all 930,000 party members.

He claimed that said the party’s central committee was not consulted over the plan before it was announced by president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat on Oct 22.

“He informed me about his talk with Datuk Seri Dr Chua Soi Lek and the plan but I was not aware of its content,” he told a press conference at Wisma MCA here yesterday.

With him were central committee members Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong, Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, Dr Hou Kok Chung, Datuk Chor Chee Heung, Lee Wei Kiat, Yoo Wei How, Datuk Yu Chok Tow and Datuk Chai Kim Sen.

Other central members present were Datuk Ho Khai Mun, Wong Siong Huee, Datuk Gan Tian Loo, Wee Jeck Seng, Datuk Liew Yuen Keong and Gan Hong Su.

Liow said the central committee was waiting to discuss the plan in greater detail.

“It should be executed based on the needs and views of the central delegates,” he said.

In the statement, Liow said the central committee respected the decision of the Oct 10 extraordinary general meeting and believed that executing the outcome of the EGM would be the quickest way for the party to return to peace and stability.

“The EGM is the highest authority that decides the future of the party and all parties should respect the outcome of the EGM,” he said.

When pressed by reporters whether he thought Ong should resign or stay on as the president, Liow said: “He has the right to stay on. He has to make the decision himself.”

Liow also denied that the central committee members, including himself, Youth chief Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong and Wanita chief Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, had pushed for Ong’s resignation.

“This is defamation and it is totally baseless,” he said.

At a later function, Chew said it was unethical for anyone to “hide behind the media” and accuse party leaders of attacking Ong.
