KAMPAR: Residents of Kuala Dipang formed a rescue team and waded into the Sungai Kampar river when they heard of the suspension bridge tragedy.

One of the volunteers, Shamsuddin Sahriman, 39, said he was told by friends of the incident at about midnight.

“I immediately gathered 12 of my friends and we began our search and rescue operation,” he said. They covered a 5km radius to search for survivors.

Speaking to reporters at the Kinta Selatan district education office co-curriculum centre near here, Shamsuddin said N. Dina Deve’s body was recovered by one of his friends, Mohd Zarid Izwan Abd Razak, 19, at 8.40am.

Her body was found at Kampung Pasir, 3km downriver from the location of incident.

“He saw a hand sticking out from a rubbish pile in the river and tried to swim near it but the strong currents deterred him,” he said.

The group had to break up into smaller groups in an effort to get near the body. The search is continuing for the two missing girls.
