SHAH ALAM: A former Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry secretary-general pleaded not guilty to 10 counts of bribery involving RM59,390.60 at a Sessions Court here.
Datuk Abdul Hanan Alang Endut, 57, claimed trial to accepting bribes in the form of blank cheques, said to be inducements to approve a research grant worth about RM10mil for a technology project in Penang.
Abdul Hanan, who is accused of committing the offences at a home in Section 17, Petaling Jaya, between Dec 1 and 15, last year, allegedly accepted the cheques from contractor Adam Omar of Global Goodway (M) Sdn Bhd.
Abdul Hanan, who is now with the Public Services Department, is alleged to have used the cheques to make several payments between Dec 15, 2008 and Feb 27, 2009, in- cluding for house renovation (RM15,024), tithes (RM25,000), credit cards (RM9,275), assessment for his premises in Section 17 and Flora Damansara in Bandar Daman- sara (RM1,542) and a deposit in his wife’s account (RM8,000).
He is also accused of making payment for the sinking fund, water bill and service charge amounting to RM534 for premises in Bandar Damansara and Taman Mas Puchong and RM15 for quit rent in Mukim Sungai Raya.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Com- mission (MACC) deputy public prosecutor Kevin Morais requested bail to be set at RM10,000 with one surety. Sessions Court judge Syafeera Mohd Said agreed.
Badrul Munir Bukhari represented Abdul Hanan as lead counsel Datuk Seri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah was attending the Perak State Assembly as an observer.
Under Section 16 of the Anti-Corruption Act 1997, Abdul Hanan faces a maximum 20-year jail term and a fine not less than five times the value of the bribes involved.
The case will be mentioned on Dec 2.
