KUALA LUMPUR: A senior Customs officer who allegedly received kickbacks from a syndicate smuggling cigarettes into the country has been arrested by the Malaysian Anti- Corruption Commission (MACC).
The officer, who is attached to the KL International Airport (KLIA), was arrested on Tuesday together with two men who were believed to be members of the syndicate involved in smuggling cigarettes worth RM840,000.
A lorry loaded with the contraband was also seized during the MACC operation.
It is learnt that the MACC was investigating possible involvement of several other individuals and have not ruled out the possibility of more arrests. All of the men have since been remanded to facilitate investigation.
