KEMAMAN: Three Indonesian workers were injured, one of them sustaining serious skull fractures, when the roof of a newly-opened mosque in Kampung Batu Putih in Kerteh here collapsed.
The three, all in their mid-20s, were doing repair works on the building after cracks appeared on the roof’s structure at the rear portion a few weeks ago.
Yesterday’s mishap caused extensive damage at the back entrance of the mosque but the pulpit area and the main entrance were not affected. The mosque was constructed last year at a cost of RM2.1mil.
The seriously-injured worked was identified as Marzuki Nordin. The others were Iswandar Othman and Saifuddin Abdullah. All three are from Aceh. Marzuki sustained injuries when heavy debris fell on him. He was rushed to Kemaman Hospital.
Villager Mohamad Sufian Ramli, 46, said he heard a thunderous noise when he was having a drink at a nearby stall.
“I saw a few locals running towards the mosque while shouting to others to contact an ambulance, as there were injured people inside,” he said,.
Kemaman OCPD Supt Abdullah Sani said police have initiated investigations.
“We were told that a marriage solemnisation ceremony was to be held at the mosque but was called off due to the mishap,” he said.
Mentri Besar Datuk Ahmad Said expressed disappointment at the mishap.
“I will direct the state Public Works Department to furnish me a full report on this incident.
“I will push for a thorough investigation to be conducted at once,” he added.
