THESE days, many companies are making efforts to go green, whether it be planting more trees or finding ways to save electricity and water.
Meanwhile, others have incorporated green technology into buildings, which the Institution of Engineers Malaysia (IEM) feels is one of the best ways to go.
IEM president Professor Datuk Dr Chuah Hean Teik said starting out with a ‘green’ building showed that one was fully committed to supporting the call to save the earth from climate change and addressed the issues right from the beginning, instead of making changes later and incurring higher costs.
He also said engineers must use technology as a tool for development.
“We should focus on enhancing our capacity for sustainable development, further increase our input in science and technology, intensify our efforts in the development of environmental infrastructure, apply clean manufacturing technology and improve the resource and environment management system,” said Chuah, who will be one of the 22 speakers at the upcoming IEM Green Workshop and Exhibition organised by IEM Consulting Engineering Special Interest Group with support from the Constructing Industry Development Board Malaysia (CIBD).
The workshop, themed Engineering a Sustainable Economic Development Model, is aimed at educating the public and the engineering fraternity on the “Green” of sustainability.
Chuah added that saving the environment did not stop at the 3Rs of Reuse, Recycle and Reduce but also included a fourth — Refuse.
“Engineers should refuse to use more than what they need,” he said.
He said at the workshop, key speakers and guests would be touching on topics such as proper planning, design materials, the right technology, how to manage construction wastes, water resources and transportation.
“We will also touch on how individuals can contribute,” said Chuah.
The keynote speakers at the workshop will be UK engineering group Arup director Peter Head, Hong Kong government planning department deputy director Jimmy C.F. Leung, and Singapore building and construction (technology development division) director Tan Tian Chong.
The two-day workshop will be held at Holiday Villa Subang Jaya on Nov 2 and 3. The registration fee is priced at RM500 (IEM/ICE member) and RM700 (non-member).
