Chap fan goodness

What say you on the issue below?

LUCKY GARDEN, which is the oldest part of the Bangsar neighbourhood, is a place worth following up for some good and cheap makan.

I’ve given this part of Bangsar plenty of mention and there are still plenty of eating outlets waiting to be discovered.

Lee Hon Yew, an old friend of mine had introduced me to the Sin Lai Ping coffee shop which is located in Lorong Ara Kiri 3 way back when I was working in Jalan Riong.

This place provided some cheap and tasty food especially the one selling chap fan (rice with mixed dishes).

“Eh Sam, the stall is known for their chee keok sheen (pork trotters in vinegared gravy) which is sold in a big pot,” said Lee.

Affordable lunch: Rice with fried bitter gourd, onion omellete and wild boar curry.

I found Lee’s claims to be true as customers made a beeline at this coffee shop during lunch hour.

On the food warmer, there are at least 30 types of dishes ranging from vegetables to meat and fish.

While the chap fan stall offers a variety of dishes where you can scoop up large portions, eating here isn’t exactly cheap.

CM Khor, my makan buddy said its a matter of moving on with time. A typical spread of three dishes, rice and a glass of hot Chinese tea is priced at RM5.50.

Add the chee keok sheen (RM7 for a large bowl), my bill came up to RM12.50.

I am neither shocked nor dumbfounded with the price tag because the food here is of a decent standard.

Most of the dishes offered here are tasty and if you are one of those who love to eat late, then you might just end up with fewer choices.

I found the vinegared pork trotters to be tasty and since this is a dish that requires plenty of rice, weight watchers and health freaks should restrain from indulging.

The trotters are springy on the outside and tender within. What I like most, is the strong and tangy flavour of the vinegared gravy and I must say that this is one of the better chee keok sheen that I’ve tasted around Kuala Lumpur.

Food aside, what I observed in this coffee shop is also very interesting.

There is a mix of people who dine here and on one single glance, I saw some rich tai-tais (madame) and construction workers sharing the same dining table.

And to make the experience memorable, the owner of this coffee shop aired music from the late Taiwanese songstress Teresa Teng.

The chap fan stall in Sin Lai Ping is open from 10am-3pm. At night, another caterer takes over with their tai chow stall.

Its not hard to get to this coffee shop as it is located behind the TMC supermarket and to all you gearheads out there, the lat-long coordinates for Sin Lai Ping are:
