Wong engraves winners’ names on trophies

What say you on the issue below?

ALL eyes were on Royal Selangor engraver Wong Suet Mooi recently as she engraved the names of the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 winners.

Nikolay Davydenko had beaten Rafael Nadal 7-6(3), 6-3 in straight sets while the French duo of Benneteau-Tsonga had defeated Frystenbert–Matkowski 6-2, 6-4.

Wong, who has almost 40 years of experience in the pewter industry, was specially flown to Shanghai to hand-engrave the names of the winners on the spot.

All in a day’s work: Wong engraving the name of the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 winner on the pewter plate.

With many cameras and lights focused on her, she calmly engraved the pewter trophies, carving the winners’ names permanently on the coveted trophies designed and created by Royal Selangor.

The Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 was held from Oct 10 to 18.

Royal Selangor was commissioned to produce the winners’ trophies for this year’s prestigious Shanghai tournament, the only ATP World Tour Masters 1000 stop in Asia.

Inspired by the spectacular Qi Zhong Tennis stadium, the venue for the tournament, the iconic pewter trophy features eight overlapping pewter shards, taking the cue from the stadium’s roof design which is constructed with eight perfectly synchronised panels that open and close like a camera’s shutter.

The team at Royal Selangor took about two weeks to design the trophies and another month to craft three champion’s trophies for the event.

The Shanghai ATP Masters 1000 is a new addition to the list of international events for Royal Selangor.

They include the 16th Commonwealth Games, World Cup Golf and the F1 Malaysia and Singapore Grand Prix.

Royal Selangor will also be supplying the medals for the East Asia Games in December this year.
