US command ship pays a call on Port Klang

THE command ship of the United States Seventh Fleet, the 39-year-old USS Blue Ridge, arrived at the Star Cruises Terminal in Port Klang yesterday for a friendly two-day visit.

The ship, which is based in Yokosuka, Japan, can accommodate 268 officers and 1,200 enlisted personnel and is equipped with 50-calibre machine guns and has a complement of two Seahawk helicopters on board.

During the visit, the renowned Seventh Fleet Band took the oppportunity to entertain Malaysians and tourists alike at the 1 Utama Shopping Centre in Petaling Jaya.

The performance took place at 6.30pm yesterday.

This is not the first time the command ship has paid a call on Malaysian shores and its last visit was in March of 2007.

Prior to that visit, sailors from the USS Blue Ridge had played friendly volleyball and football matches with Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) personnel in 2006.

On that occasion, RMN did Malaysia proud by winning the football match 3-1.
