THE first ever Deepavali music compilation album is now on sale for Hindus and Malaysians alike to celebrate the festival of lights.

The CD is the fruit of the Global Song-writing competition for Deepavali songs called the Celcom Deepa Raaga.

All 15 songs are from the grand finals list which was held on Sept 10 in Petaling Jaya.

The Celcom Deepa Raaga competition was held over three months from June with over 150 entries including from countries like India, Sri Lanka and Singapore.

The preliminary round was judged by Samuel J. Dass, Babu Loganaatan and Prakash Kanda-swamy while Singapore-based music director Mohd Rafee and vocalist Preeta Prasad were added for the grand finals.

The first song in the CD is the winning song Oliveesum Thirunaal composed by Mansher Singh and Suresh Rogen and sung by sisters Sharanya and Suganya.

Their songs were judged on quality of lyrics, music composition, singing as well as stage presence.

According to organiser M. Marren, they wanted to expand the distribution so that the people could have a compilation of Deepavali songs for the festival this year.

“We hope the people will enjoy this collection of songs. It is our gift to the community,” he said.

The CD distribution is being handled by JS Ragaa Music Sdn Bhd and are available at over 100 outlets nationwide.

“We have sent out 5,000 copies to all over the country and to Singapore as well,” said V. Jeya-ratnam from JS Ragaa.

The CDs are priced at RM19.90.

JS Ragaa has also set up a booth at the 1Malaysia Deepavali Carnival at the KL Sentral open car park.
