PACKAGE B of the Batu/Jinjang flood mitigation project costing RM548mil is expected to be completed by Dec 24 this year.
The project, implemented in August 2003, is 99.4% complete, said the Natural Resources and Environment Ministry in a statement.
Its minister Datuk Douglas Unggah Embas visited the project site on Tuesday.
The flood mitigation project comprises two inter-related flood diversion schemes.
“The schemes are a new diversion channel to divert Sungai Keroh flood flow to Jinjang detention ponds and the upgrading of Gombak diversion to allow more discharge diversion from Sungai Gombak to the enlarged Batu detention pond which is 4.5 million cubic meters,” the statement said.
Ex-mining ponds are used to store the excessive storm water during heavy rain and then is released when the rain water in the river subsides.
Once the project is completed, it will help to relieve the flooding at Segambut and Gombak areas.
”It will also complement the SMART project to alleviate the flooding in the city centre by regulating the storm water from the north western catchment and the excessive flow
”About 500,000 people will benefit from this project, especially in areas such as PWTC, Tabung Haji at Jalan Ipoh, Masjid Jamek, Masjid India and Dataran Merdeka,” the ministry said.
