JOHOR BARU: Two kidnappers only had time to spend RM100 of their ransom before being killed in a shoot out with police near Chaah, Segamat.
The kidnappers, aged 35 and 38, had collected the ransom of RM130,000 from an undisclosed location before meeting their end at Km15 of Jalan Yong Peng yesterday.
Johor police chief Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Sharif said police received a report on Tuesday that a 16-year-old boy had been kidnapped.
"We immediately set up a team to track down the kidnappers and rescue the victim," he said.
Mokhtar, however, declined to give details of how and where the boy was kidnapped due to "security reasons".
On Thursday, the victim's family paid a ransom of RM130,000 and the boy was released unharmed.
The police team which had been monitoring exchanges between the kidnappers and the victim's family immediately swung into action.
They tracked the kidnappers to the small town of Chaah with a tip-off. The two kidnappers were spotted in a parked car about 1.50am yesterday.
"When the police team approached the car, one of the kidnappers fired three shots," Mokhtar said, adding that police returned fire and killed both kidnappers on the spot.
Police recovered RM129,900 of the ransom along with a .38 revolver, three bullet casings, 30 bullets and three parang.
Checks revealed that the kidnappers were from Jementah, Segamat. One of the them had a conviction for theft.
Mokhtar said with this success, Johor police have solved seven kidnapping cases this year.
