D-G: Joanna withdrew due to loss of interest

What say you on the issue below?

PUTRAJAYA: Joanna Gilbert Asson, the woman who was allegedly told that she was too fat to be a teacher, withdrew from the postgraduate course for teachers due to loss of interest in the profession.

The Education Ministry's director-general, Tan Sri Alimuddin Mohd Dom, said that in her withdrawal letter to the ministry, Joanna had clearly stated that she had lost interest in teaching and there was no mention of any discriminatory remarks made against her.

"As directed by Education Minister, Tan Sri Muhyddin Yassin, I looked into the case and found that the reason for her withdrawal was because she was no longer interested in being a teacher.

"There was nothing in the letter that indicated she had been called fat or been discriminated against by any Sungai Rajang Teacher Training College officer.

He said the fiasco was a misunderstanding between the teacher training college and the 29-year-old Universiti Tenaga Nasional business administration graduate.

He said it was odd that Joanna had only decided to highlight this issue in the press this week when the alleged discriminatory incident took place in June.

"That said, we are most prepared to accept her as we found that she had passed the entrance examination and interview in May."

Alimuddin said the ministry had not discriminated against Joanna, adding that she could still register as a trainee teacher on Jan 18 as the intake for this year was closed.

A news report on Wednesday quoted Joanna as saying a senior officer of the college had allegedly said she was too fat to be a teacher when she checked in on June 22.

Joanna then wrote to the ministry to withdraw from the course.
