Majority of PAS leaders likely to reject muktamar

PETALING JAYA: The majority of PAS leaders are likely to object to the special muktamar mooted by PAS spiritual leader Datuk Seri Nik Aziz Nik Mat.

They will express their views on matters raised on Nik Aziz’s tokgurublog.com during a special meeting scheduled at the PAS headquarters tonight.

Nik Aziz had suggested a special muktamar for pro-Umno PAS leaders to seek a fresh mandate.

He had named party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang, deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa, secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali and Selangor PAS commissioner Datuk Hassan Ali as pro-Umno leaders who supported the idea of forming a unity government.

Sources said the majority of the leaders shared the view that the situation did not warrant a special muktamar as the party was not facing any serious internal conflict that could not be resolved using existing channels.

Mustafa said the idea of forming a unity government was a non-issue as it had been shot down during the June muktamar.

“The matters that suddenly flared up on Tok Guru’s blog caught many by surprise. But we should be able to resolve the matter during the special meeting,’’ he said, adding that Nik Aziz had confirmed he would be attending the meeting tonight.

“Only Muslimat chief Nuridah Mohd Salleh and treasurer Dr Hatta Ramli will not attend the meeting as they are currently abroad,’’ he said.

Dewan Ulama chief Datuk Ustaz Harun Taib said the syura council meeting would only be convened if the situation warranted it.

In KOTA BARU, PAS central committee member Datuk Husam Musa dismissed the perception that he was behind the latest outburst by Nik Aziz.

“But Alhamdullillah (Thank God), I have been very patient to weather these allegations and have not reacted to accusations made by certain parties.

“I want to state here that the proposal by Tok Guru was one thousand per cent his and I am not involved in whatever Tok Guru wants to say or do,” he told reporters after attending the State Legislative Assembly here yesterday.

Husam said he was confident that people would eventually know his true intentions and stand on the contentious issues plaguing the party.

He had asked Nik Aziz yesterday on whether he had called for an EGM to get party members to elect a new line-up as reported in the newspapers.

“Tok Guru explained that he had no intentions to call for an EGM to take a vote of no confidence or re-elect office bearers but for the party to make a stand whether they want to be with Pakatan Rakyat or forge a cooperation with Umno-Barisan Nasional,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kelantan PAS secretary Zaki Ibrahim said a state level meeting would be held here before Nik Aziz leaves to attend the special meeting organised by the central committee in Kuala Lumpur.

The meeting, he said, was important to express the state liaison committee’s views on the current issue and ways to strengthen the commitment with Pakatan Rakyat.
