KL set to recognise courses from Chinese varsities

MALAYSIA is working out the details to recognise the academic programmes of four universities in China, reported Sin Chew Daily.

The universities are Peking Uni-versity, Tsinghua University, Beijing Language and Culture University as well as the Beijing Foreign Studies University.

MCA president Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat said the Government was in the midst of working out a structure to fully recognise their academic programmes.

Once implemented, the Govern-ment would include the four universities in the Public Service Department’s list.

“This means that graduates from these universities would qualify for positions in the public sector,’’ he said.

Ong added that the MCA had initially pushed for the recognition of the Chinese Studies programmes offered by the four universities.

Ong said he had led a delegation to China in relation to the issue when he was the Deputy Higher Education Minister.

Currently, Malaysia recognises the Traditional Chinese Medicine programmes from five Chinese universities.

From Jan 1, products containing CFC, Halon and Carbon Tetrachloride are no longer allowed to enter the country.

Natural Resources and Environ-ment Minister Datuk Douglas Uggah Embas said this move was in adherence to the regulations after signing the Montreal Protocol for the protection of the ozone layer.

The Montreal Protocol is an international treaty designed to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the production of substances believed to be responsible for the ozone depletion.

Apart from the three substances, the use of other ozone-depleting substances such as Methyl Bromide and Methylchloroform will be reduced and eventually phased out.
