JOHOR BARU: Firemen who have been taking medical leave (MC) to celebrate longer Hari Raya take note: the department is sick and tired of this and will take action against the culprits.
State Fire and Rescue Department director Ab Ghani Daud said this irresponsible practice had affected the quality of service in some fire stations.
He warned firemen that stern action would be taken against anyone found to have taken MC to celebrate the festive season.
Ab Ghani said most of the men involved took MCs from private clinics even though they were fit to work.
“I am very disappointed with them. Their actions rendered us ill-equipped to face any emergency,” he said.
Ab Ghani was quick to point out that luckily their operations were not affected in a major way.
“The roster was set during festive seasons and each fire station was supposed to have eight men on duty but in some cases only five men reported in,” he said, adding that it took six men to operate a fire engine.
He was speaking to reporters after awarding service medals and excellent service awards to 102 personnel state-wide.
Ab Ghani added that so far disciplinary action had been taken against 16 firemen in the state for various reasons but none had been sacked.
“Those involved will not be promoted or get their bonus,” Ab Ghani said, adding that he hoped doctors would only issue MCs for those who were genuinely sick.
