A display of kolam creativity

What say you on the issue below?

ABOUT 200 students of Limkokwing University of Creative Technology (LUCT) will be spending more time at the shopping mall this week to complete their three large kolams.

The kolams, designed by the university students, have been on display at the Pavilion Kuala Lumpur from Thursday as part of the mall’s collaboration with LUCT for the upcoming Deepavali celebrations.

The students from 104 countries have been tirelessly attending to the kolams all day at the Pavilion Kuala Lumpur since they started work on Monday.

The kolams are placed at the entrance and flow down to the staircase area leading to its concourse.

Packed with glue and 1,000kg of coloured rice, the students began work early on Monday much to the surprise of many curious shoppers.

Indonesian Yenty Tanasal, 24, said she had no idea what a kolam was until her lecturer explained it to them.

She said she found it interesting as it involved learning the culture and tradition of Malaysians.

Shahana Akther from Bangladesh said she had never seen the art before but volunteered to join her classmates as she thought it would be a simple affair.

“It looks easy but it is not. However, I am not complaining because I am having so much fun just trying to finish my section of the pattern of a peacock,” said Shahana who is studying Fashion and Design at LUCT.

For Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, this is the second year they are celebrating the festival with the LUCT students.

“Last year, the students came up with different kolams but on a smaller scale than this year,” said Pavilion Kuala Lumpur general manager (Marketing) Kung Suan Ai.

Kung said the festival was about bringing people together and the shopping mall decided that the best way was through involving of people.

“We believe in doing things together and here we also want to promote local talents,” said Kung.

The celebration themed “International Kolam Festival” would see the students creating three kolams as well as a stunning 3D kolam as the centrepiece.

The centrepiece measuring 40’x36’ would be decorated with 3,600 flat backs and thousands of crystallised-Swarovski elements by Swarovski and a gown designed by Melinda Looi and also adorned with the crystallized-Swarovskidetails.

The dress would only be revealed during the launch where all 200 students will also be participating as they would be dressed in their own traditional costumes.

Kung said the showcase would bring not only traditional elements of the celebration but also combine fashion and style.

The “International Kolam Festival” will be held at the Bukit Bintang Entrance and Spanish Steps, Pavilion KL from Oct 1 to Oct 18.
