KUALA LUMPUR: Information, Communications and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim will meet with those in the creative industry on the distribution of allocation under the newly-established Creative Industry Fund.

The RM200 million fund is to finance activities such as film and drama productions, music, animation, advertisements and also local content development.

Bank Simpanan Nasional will provide the soft loans.

"This is the first time the government is giving a big commitment for the industry."

Under the 2010 Budget, the creative industry is seen as having the potential to be further developed as a contributor to the economic growth.

The industry encompasses performing arts and music, design, animation, advertisement and content development.

Meanwhile, when commenting on the broadband rebate, Rais said this would be the sole catalyst to increase broadband usage.

He is confident the move would see increasing Internet penetration in households from 20 to 30 per cent.

"Next year, we expect it to hit 50 per cent, as targeted."

The government has proposed that individual taxpayers be given tax relief on broadband subscription fee up to RM500 a year from 2010 to 2012.
