Wendy Ong the calligrapher

What say you on the issue below?

KUALA LUMPUR: Puan Seri Wendy Ong learned all five calligraphy styles but she is best in the xing shu (running script) type. Teacher Kerk Won Hoo said Ong, wife of former MCA president Tan Sri Ong Ka Ting, was a focused and hardworking student. “As a beginner, she has done well. Her work is above average,” he said, adding that Ong possessed the talent for calligraphy.

Besides the xing shu, the other types of Chinese calligraphy are zhuan shu (seal script), li shu (clerical script), kai shu (regular script) and cao shu (cursive script).

Kerk, 44, who has his studio Mo-dian Cultural Centre in Klang, said he learned calligraphy at 16 at a private school.

He has taught calligraphy for 20 years and is one of the teachers at MCA’s Lifelong Learning Centre.

Kerk encouraged his students to display their works in solo exhibitions as part of the learning process.

Ong said her calligraphy focused mainly on words of wisdom as well as words from Buddha.

She added that it took her two months to come up with 45 pieces of calligraphy.

MCA central committee member Dr Hou Kok Chung, also the Deputy Higher Education Minister, launched Ong’s solo Chinese calligraphy exhibition yesterday.

Ong’s exhibition on the 13th Floor of Wisma MCA ends tomorrow (11am to 5pm).
