KUALA LUMPUR: The 2010 Budget saw a well-defined spending plan for the expansion of the Permata programme that stresses on early childcare and education.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the government allocated RM100 million to implement the Permata Negara for early childcare and education programme; Permata Seni for the training of gifted students in the performing arts; Permata Pintar for the nurturing of gifted pupils and Permata Insan for the education of pupils in understanding, internalising and practising the fundamentals of the Quran.
Najib added Permata would also implement the Perkasa Remaja programme to train and guide youth between 18 and 25 years old to discourage them from getting involved in social ills.
"The programme, administered by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, will enable youth to be more responsible and useful to society and the nation," he said at the tabling of the Budget yesterday.
The Permata programme, which was mooted by Najib's wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, has been introduced in 457 childcare centres and benefited 17,565 children.
