KUALA LUMPUR: Trouble seems to be brewing in Pas as its spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat has suggested a special meeting to discuss changing the party leadership, with party president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang on the cull list.
In a post on his blog, www.blogtokguru.com, Nik Aziz, who is also Kelantan menteri besar, called on Pas to have a special meeting to weed out "problematic leaders" who have made the party look inconsistent.
"I feel that there is a strong need for a change of the major players in the Pas leadership. This can be a preparation for the next general election. We must take steps similar to Umno and MCA to settle their internal problems. Our issue is with two or three problematic leaders," Nik Aziz wrote.
In response, Hadi, speaking in Marang, said he would call Nik Aziz on the matter. He said he "had heard about it" but declined to comment further until he had the full picture.
It is known that the team under Hadi is keen on Umno's proposal for a unity government while Nik Aziz, on the other hand, feels that there is a need to strengthen Pas in Pakatan Rakyat.
The matter has been going on for some time but recently Hadi openly said that Pas would not engage Umno over a unity government.
Nik Aziz said the meeting would help fence-sitters to decide whether or not to back Pas in the coming election.
"We need a special assembly (muktamar) for the sake of party renewal (tajdid). If the delegates decide not to replace the president, then we move on."
Nik Aziz said it was hard for him to criticise other Pas leaders but he was doing so for the future of the party.
"Furthermore, in Islam, there is nothing wrong in criticising our leaders if it can bring about good."
Nik Aziz appeared to be upset with senior party leaders -- Hadi, secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali and Selangor Pas commissioner Datuk Dr Hasan Mohd Ali.
"Maybe the time is right for Pas to carry out drastic measures either to discipline Hasan or expel him," he wrote.
"But this is not easy to do as Hasan is seen as representing the pro-Umno group, like Hadi and party deputy president Nasharuddin Mat Isa.
"There are some leaders in Pas who can bring about change. In recent months, Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak has been proving himself as someone of great credibility and good image. He is someone who has the potential to lead Pas."
