THE recent slowdown had not only hit companies and individuals but also welfare homes.
One of those homes is Rumah Orang Tua Ampang which relies on donations.
Cheah Soon Seong, secretary of the Ampang Welfare Committee, which runs the Rumah Orang Tua Ampang, said the home had 25 men and 25 women.
All the residents are above 60 years of age were not married.
“Not many people come to visit them because some of the residents are single or do not have any relatives,” said Cheah.
“This season we had not had many visitors.
“Sometimes companies come to visit and bring donations but it also depends on the economy. If the economy is not so good, we get fewer visitors and less donations.”
There was a bit of cheer for the residents recently when they received some donations – supplements from Caring Pharmacy and T-shirts from Microsoft Malaysia.
The donations were part of a project by the students of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia’s Dental Faculty.
The students visited the home to conduct a study on “Oral health-related quality of life and nutritional status among the elderly”.
The home’s residents who took part in the study received the supplements and T-shirts.
The students will also be visiting other homes as part of their survey.
