MIRI: A crew member on board a 123-tonne vessel has gone missing in the South China Sea after the ship ran into strong winds and high waves some 86km off the shore of Bintulu.
Rescue teams from the marine police, the police air wing, the maritime enforcement agency and Petronas (the ship belonged to a Petronas sub-contractor) had launched an operation to try find Ewin Setiawan, 31, from Indonesia.
Bintulu police chief Supt Sulaiman Abdul Razak said yesterday that efforts were ongoing to search the sea following a police report lodged by Petronas on Monday.
“Initial reports said the crewman went missing after the vessel was hit by strong waves,” he said.
It was initially believed that the ship — used to transport offshore workers from platform to platform and belonging to Jaya Coastal Transport Sdn Bhd — had capsized; and all seven crew members on board had fallen into the sea with six rescued and Ewin gone missing.
However, Petronas Sarawak Regional headquarters in Miri yesterday called for a press conference and denied that the vessel had capsized.
Petronas Sarawak Regional General Manager Datin Mary Sadiah Zainuddin said Ewin had been sleeping inside his cabin and was found to be missing later.
