Yasmin Ahmad’s film wins Golden Kancil

What say you on the issue below?

MORE than a thousand creative people from the advertising industry turned up for the 2009 Kancil Awards Ceremony, held on Oct 30.

The Kancil Awards, the advertising industry’s annual big night, was held at the Sime Darby Convention Centre Ballroom.

The big winner was Leo Burnett, which bagged the Agency of the Year award. Besides the main Golden Kancil award, it racked up a gold, two silver and seven bronze awards at the ceremony organised by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents Malaysia (4As).

As usual, the atmosphere at the ceremony was a mix between a high-spirited sports event and a full-on party, as attendants cheered the winners on.

But there were some serious moments, like when a TV commercial entitled Funeral, directed by the late filmmaker Yasmin Ahmad, won the Golden Kancil in the film category.

The joy of winning: IF Interactive Sdn Bhd executive director Christopher Koh (standing, second from left, holding the Kancil certificate), creative director Liew San Yen (front row, left) and the company’s team celebrating after winning the Golden Kancil at the Kancil Awards 2009 for its digital work entitled ‘Seconds Away’.

The three-minute film was commissioned by the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports Singapore (MCYS) to promote marriage.

It shows a woman (played by Jo Kukathas) addressing the people at her husband’s funeral, saying that she hoped her three children would also find life partners who were as “beautifully imperfect” as her husband.

Kancil Awards 2009 chairman Ng Chiew Peng requested for a minute of silence in memory of the late Yasmin.

“Her well-known work in copywriting, the ever-touching and emotional TV commercials and film direction was a true inspiration for the entire industry and she will be missed dearly,” she said.

The night was emceed by radio DJs Godfrey Rajaratnam and Natalie Kneisa.

Ng added that this creative award show has been a vital part of the industry for the past 30 years.

The Kancil Awards has been held annually since 1978 by the 4As to honour excellence in creativity in advertising produced by member agencies.
