Ladies’ second gala dinner nets RM100,000

What say you on the issue below?

A TOTAL of RM100,000 was collected for three homes in the Klang Valley during a 1Malaysia Charity Gala Night hosted by the Multicultural Ladies Association (MLA) recently.

The gala dinner was held for the second time since the association’s inception in 2005.

The three homes chosen were Rumah Amal Limpahan Kasih (RALK) Puchong, Lovely Nursing Centre (Childcare), Kelana Jaya, PJ and Handicapped and Disabled Children’s Association of Klang Selangor.

“All the homes are multiracial but most of the residents are Indians. Not many people are helping these homes,” said the founder and association president, Patricia Lum.

There were 500 guests from corporations, socialites, including guest-of-honour Women, Family and Community Development Minister Senator Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil.

During the gala night, there was an auction for 17 items, among them, an antique clock, a bottle of aged whisky and an intriguing two-hour dinner with Shahrizat.

The dinner with Shahrizat fetched the highest bid of RM20,000 while dining with Patricia Lum fetched RM10,000.

The association started with a group of ladies who were encouraged by Shahrizat to start an association to help the community.

“I was a lady of leisure for 35 years so it was hard for me to jump over from my comfort zone,” added Lum.

Ever since 2005, the association has raised more than half a million to aid various organisations in Malaysia.

“We have good network and connections, it is a shame if we do not use them to help people,” she added.

Among the services the association has rendered to the public is to conduct seminars for women, buy an ambulance for a HIV association and organise projects for senior citizens, disabled and orphans.

Shahrizat in her speech said, she prompted the ladies to start the association because it was wonderful to give part of their time to charity.

“Barely four years after it was established, the MLA has become one of the most active non-governmental associations,” she added.

She added that welfare was not only about giving out money and she hoped the homes would use the money well.

During the dinner, the Miss MLA contest was also held to introduce and give due recognition to members of the board.

Lum said the women had worked hard and deserved a fun contest. This year the ladies dressed in batik for the contest.

Adding to the night’s entertainment was 10-year-old boy Andrew Lee — a Michael Jackson impersonator who performed to the lively beat of “Billie Jean”.

It was also in recognisation of a book by Dr Victor SL Tan entitled The Secret of Change which has earned a place in the Malaysia Book or Records for being the first Motivational Book in Rhymes.
